5 Of My Favorite Sci-Fi Games

I’m bringing back Top Ten Tuesday posts! Every Tuesday (if the topic interests me) I’ll be sharing a TTT post. Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl! Make sure to check out her page explaining everything you need to know, including future topics.

Today’s TTT topic is about non-bookish hobbies. If I am being honest, I don’t have a lot of hobbies outside of book related ones. I read, I blog, I like movies & TV, and I oddly really enjoy cleaning/organizing. I recently got into Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer is an ongoing hobby in this house. That’s it, that’s my post. Thanks for reading!

Just kidding! I’m mixing today’s prompt up a little because 1. I don’t think I could make a full post on the list above and 2. I’m making this sci-fi themed for Sci-Fi Month! Today, I’m going to talk about one of my favorite hobbies, video games, and some of the sci-fi games I love! (I was going to include ones I want to play, but I ran out of time. Oops). Anyways, let’s dive in! First up is…

ASSASSIN’S CREED
“Assassin’s Creed begins with a man named Desmond Miles, a New York bartender who is abducted by Abstergo Industries and forced to relive his ancestors’ memories through the Animus in order to help Abstergo find the locations of Pieces of Eden.” (source) *This is a quick introduction summary to the first game, lots of shenanigans ensue after this event.

What I love about it these games are the historical aspects. When you enter the Animus and go back in time to play as an assassin, each game takes you somewhere new. From playing as Altair in the Third Crusade of 1191 in Jerusalem, to Ezio in 15th century Italy, to the pirate Edward Kenway in the 18th century, to Bayek in 49 BCE Egypt, to a mercenary (male or female) in 431 BCE Greece, and MORE. This year, there is a new one coming out called Valhalla taking place in 873 AD about a fictional Viking invasion of Britain (you can play either male or female in this game too!). Honestly, these games are just so fun with all the different settings. If you haven’t played them, I highly recommend them! Black Flag is my personal favorite (though I have not played a couple of them and Valhalla is not out yet). The image below is art for Valhalla…I mean, come on! I need it.

BIOSHOCK INFINITE
“Set in 1912, the deep in debt Booker DeWitt has one final opportunity to clean his slate: rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious and secretive girl imprisoned since her childhood in the floating city of Columbia.”

Disclaimer: I have not played the other Bioshock games. I don’t know why, I just skipped them. Then Bioshock Infinite came out, and I would say it is kind of a different feel. It seems more steampunk than the other games, but correct me if I’m wrong. Anyways, I really loved this game! I loved the setting of a floating city and the steampunk details I mentioned earlier. It was a simple and fun game.

DISHONORED 2
“Fifteen years after the events of Dishonored, Empress Emily Kaldwin is removed from the throne when dissidents pull off a coup d’état. Now Emily, or her father – and mentor – Corvo Attano, must do what is necessary to reclaim Dunwall Tower and the mantle of Empress.”

This one leans more on the fantasy side (magic), but it does have sci-fi elements (robots, mechanical gadgets) – it even has some paranormal elements to it. Basically, it has it all. Mainly, I enjoy the gameplay of this. It reminds me of Assassin’s Creed in that you can choose to either be stealthy or just go in guns blazin’. I like stealth because you really get to take advantage of some of the cool magical tricks you get. Plus, I kind of suck at games so the less actual fighting I have to do, the better 😆 Also, the setting is dark and gritty. It’s just a really great game. (You do not have to have played Dishonored to play this one, I didn’t.)

HALO
“Super-soldier John-117, Master Chief of the United Nations Space Command, must battle a genocidal alien race known as the Covenant following his violent crash-landing on Halo, an ancient and mysterious ring-world.”

I think my husband would disown me if I didn’t include the Halo franchise on this list. While I haven’t played every game, I have played a few. It’s basically just an alien shooter what is fairly easy (not for me because I suck at aiming, which is pretty essential in a shooter) It’s a family friendly game, though, which I think is actually somewhat rare these days. So it’s a perfect game to play with your kids! It’s also one of the few games that still have split screen (although I’m not sure about the newest game) which is another reasons it’s a great family game. It’s simple to follow the story, to play, and the whole family can enjoy it together!

FALLOUT
“The background story of Fallout involves a “what-if” scenario in which the United States of America tries to devise fusion power resulting in the whole country becoming hegemonic and having less reliance on petroleum. However, this is not achieved until 2077, shortly after an oil drilling conflict off the Pacific Coast pits the United States against China. It ends with a nuclear exchange resulting in the post-apocalyptic world in which the game takes place.” (I couldn’t find a simple summary anywhere, sorry.)

If you know me, you know I love anything that is post-apocalyptic/end-of-the-world. Fallout is just that. Here’s the thing, though, I have never finished this game. It’s just a lot, so I play for a bit, then don’t go back to it, then start over – that cycle has continued many times. It’s a good game but the fighting is a little wonky for me and I die a lot >.< But that setting, y’all. Post-apocalyptic and what Wikipedia is calling “retro-futuristic” is so amazing. I just want to look at it all day.

HONORABLE MENTION: GEARS OF WAR
“14 days after Emergance Day, Marcus is freed from prison and his life sentence for leaving his post during the Battle of Aspho Fields, to join the COG Army once again in humanity’s epic fight for survival against the Locust. Together with his best friend Dom and the rest of Delta Squad he is sent on a mission to destroy the Locust Horde.”

I have not played this game but it is another one that I think my husband will disown me if I do not mention it. So, here it is 😆 Personally, this one isn’t exactly my cup of tea. It’s another alien shooter, but there’s just something about it that I’m not super into (sorry, husband, don’t hate me).

Do you play video games? Would you give them a try if you don’t? Have you played any of the ones above? Any recommendations?

I’m not into video or role playing games, but some friends of ours recently introduced my 11yo daughter to D&D and she LOVES it. On Sunday, they played it for hours and she had a blast!

    Happy TTT!

These days I’m a retrogamer (I’m old!), but the Commodore Amiga games scene back in the early 90s was (and still is!) my thing. Made a huge impression on me at the time (as well as introducing me to computer art). A lot of those sci-fi based games still inspire me today. For me, the best one was an epic platform called Turrican. It had the very best gameplay, music and creativity of its time. The Chaos Engine was another absolute masterpiece. And I’ve always been font of a classic shoot-em-up… titles like Disposable Hero, Menace and Apidya are among the those that I loved. I’m also married to an Assassin’s Creed addict, so I can see how breathtaking and immersive these games (or rather experiences) are, though I’m yet to play it myself!

I haven’t heard of any of the games you mentioned. I didn’t really get into video games beyond Mario Bros until the xbox was a thing lol I definitely recommend trying AC for yourself! If you like open world games, that is. The first games are more linear but they expand as the games go on. If you like pirates, play Black Flag. You get to man a ship of your own, very cool!

Assassin’s Creed is one of my favorite franchises even though I haven’t played beyond AC3 lol. Such a fun premise and the story is cool as heck.

Yeah, I have to admit, I actually haven’t played all of them. Especially the recent ones. I play vicariously through my husband. Like right now, I’m watching him play Valhalla. I’m hoping to play myself but, who knows lol. I do love the story though! It’s very interesting!

I am trying so hard to wait until Black Friday to buy the game because I’d hate for it to go on sale after I buy the digital download, but it is so hard. The game looks amazing!

I guess I’m a bit old school here. Growing up a Star Trek fan and without a truly great Star Trek video game to play, I would pretend that any Atari 2600 game I had that was tangentially related to space combat was somehow me sitting in the center seat being Captain Kirk. So, needless to say I spent hours playing Star Raiders and Star Master (essentially the same game) and throwing out Captain Kirk lines. And then there was Megamania where I swear the ship on the bottom of the screen looked like the Enterprise!

I was eventually rewarded when movers lost our Atari and I got the Vectrex system for Christmas. I got the game Star Trek: The Motion Picture and I played the heck out of that thing. I wasted many an hour in my formative years playing it.

I will admit that I’ve not played as many of the games out there today (a four year old tends to limit your time to consume pop culture). I did play through the (wait for it) Star Trek 25th anniversary and Star Trek Judgement Rights game. I had a ton of fun but they’re pretty much point and click puzzle solving. I also worked on the DS9 tie-in game for a bit but eventually gave up on it.

I do love your selections and find myself curious about them. I played a bit of Halo and feel like it had a great backstory and worldbuilding to it. Alas, most first-person shooters can’t hold a candle to my favorite — Duke Nukem 3-D. Oh, the hours of fun I had with that and the time we wasted at work playing over the network. I mean, no….testing network usability.

I have never played any of those games lol My first system was a Super Nintendo. Lots of Mario Bros and Disney games haha Halo does have a great backstory and hey, with a 4 year old, they’ll be video game playing age in no time and you can play together! lol I have a while to wait for that age, my son is only 11 months old.

I myself don’t play video games but my son plays a few of the ones listed here. The imagery is very cool.
