Last week, I let my son and husband pick my TBR. This week, I’m kind of picking my son’s. With Mother’s Day around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share a little about the bookish side of being a mom! One of the best things about loving books and having children is being able to introduce your children to all the stories you love – or just all the magic that stories hold. When my son was born, I started reading The Lightning Thief to him. Just a little every night. Now, three years later…we still haven’t finished it. Oops. But let’s be real, it’s not like he understood the story and he would mostly just fall asleep anyway.
Now that he’s older, he’s able to sit for just a bit longer for chapter books. While I enjoy reading books for his age (he’s three), I do love reading more lush stories to him. I’m sure I’ll read a lot of these more than once to him. Even better would be if they become favorites of his when he’s able to read them on his own. But for now, here is my little TBR of books I want to read to my toddler within the next couple of years!
- Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor – I remember reading this book as a child and loving it (though I also remember it being sad). I just hope to bring something from my childhood into his!
- The BFG by Roald Dahl – We’ve already begun this one and it’s simple enough that he was understanding it (and the Yoto card) when he was only 2.5 years old. I just haven’t continued for some reason. I hope to get back to it once we’re done with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone!
- Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling – I’m actually currently reading the first book to him now! He can’t really sit for a long time with chapter books, though (which is expected). I opted to get the illustrated edition and I read roughly one page per night. I actually never got the chance to read these books as a kid (they were banned at my school by the time the second book came out), so I’m excited to bring the magic to him. He already loves watching me play Hogwarts Legacy!
- Redwall by Brian Jacques – My husband loved these books. We even still have three that my husband owned as a child. So, this is another nostalgic read!
- Cress Watercress by Gregory Maguire – I actually don’t know a lot about this book, just that I got it from a book tour that I was part of. And it has a rabbit on the cover. Good enough for me.
- The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan – This is a little selfish of me because I’ve never read this series. Reading it to him means I finally get to read it for the first time too! That’s it, that’s the reason. I managed to almost finish this back when he was a baby, but I’m going to be rereading it now that he actually understands…english ( 😆 seriously, he was a newborn when I started it)
- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien – This should be for obvious reasons – but just in case you’re new here: The Hobbit is my favorite book of all time AND my husband is obsessed with Tolkien. In fact, our wedding was themed around Tolkien’s work (and the movie Braveheart). I’ve tried to start this one with my son already, but I think he’s just a smidge too young. It’s not as simple as Harry Potter, or even The Lightning Thief, but I’m hoping one day soon we can finally read the illustrated edition that I bought back when I was still pregnant with him!
Have you read any of these? Have you read them to your kids?
Do you remember one of the first books you ever read, or had read to you?

There’s not much better than sharing our love of reading with our kids! I read The Hobbit with my kiddos and we enjoyed it. I’ve also read The Call of the Wild, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and Bud, Not Buddy with my son, all of which he enjoyed. Happy reading!
That’s so wonderful! I’ll have to look into some of those because the only one I know of is The Call of the Wild. He might be a little young for some chapter books, though. My son is only 3 and a half lol
Haha! Yes, pencil those in for when he’s 8-12. 😃
I was a big Roald Dahl kid. 🙂
I actually never read his books when I was younger! I didn’t even know some of the stories that I am familiar with were written by him. So it’ll be fun to introduce myself and my son to his work 🙂
I love that you’re inspiring reading in his life at such a young age! He’s likely going to grow up so well read and enjoying so many cool, magical and wonderful stories. 🙂 Though I’ve heard of several of these, I never read any. Far too busy reading Dear America or American Girl books I guess. 😉
I hope he loves books as much as I do! I didn’t become a huge reader until I was in my 20s. I hope that it’s different for him!
