No matter what I do, no matter what steps I take to avoid it, I'm always playing right into somebody's hand.
Playing the role I was destined for.
Two years have passed since her willing return to the DSD, and Wynter Reeves is no longer the timid girl who only wanted to blend in. Strong, confidant, and in control of her once debilitating powers, the world trembles at her feet while news of what she’s capable of spreads like fire among the State’s enemies. As the death toll rises and Dr. Richter further warps her into a weapon of war, Wynter is forced to embrace the daunting reality of what she’s become. With the remnants of her humanity hanging on by a shoestring, she must choose between the one sacrifice that could lead to her salvation or the dark path of destruction from which there can be no return.
Torn between two sides of a war she never asked for, will Wynter find her freedom, or will she be doomed to remain a monster forever?

Here is a review of M.A. Phipps’ newest book Type X, the second book in her Project W.A.R. series 🙂

PLOT

Type X answers so many questions that I had from Ultraxenopia. It’s as if Phipps read my review and then included all of my questions (I know she didn’t but damn, she’s good).

I usually dislike the second book in a trilogy because I always feel like it’s a filler, like nothing really happens and it’s just a huge build up to the third book. I didn’t feel that way with Type X. While the plot does lead up to a great ending that will have you wanting book three immediately, it really focuses on some of the unanswered questions from book one and the character development of Wynter (which we’ll get to in a second). I find it rare that a dystopian novel focuses so much of the plot on the character, it’s usually all about the action, so I found that incredibly refreshing.

Aside from the focus on the characters, I did enjoy the direction Phipps took the overall plot. I liked the comparisons that were made for each side of the war that it caused you to question some of their ethics and morality.

PLOT (1)

As if I haven’t mentioned enough about the character development, let’s do it again. The character development is amazing. Wynter changes so much from Ultraxenopia to this book. There is a lot of time spent on her inner struggles and how she transitions from one point in her life to the next.

Wynter became a much stronger woman in Type X. However, she still carried some of her traits from before the events of Ultraxenopia. To me, she was still at the core, a tad naïve because she wants to help her friends regardless of the cost. At the same time, she was extremely self-reflective, realizing her own mishaps and faults. I appreciated that in a character such as her, one who was given incredible power but still just naïve and gullible enough to make mistakes. It made her quite a complex character.

As for the other character, they were very secondary in this book. I think that had to do with the amount of attention that was given to Wynter. I did want a little more from one of my favorite characters, like Jenner. Again, this is a trilogy, and with the direction Phipps took this book, I’m expecting some great things with the characters from book 3.

PLOT (2)

I absolutely love Phipps’ writing. I love the inner monologues she gives Wynter. They are my favorite things about these books. Phipps continued that great inner voice into this novel — it really just makes you feel immersed in her thoughts. For a book that relies on the development of the protagonist, that is a huge benefit. As for the pacing, as a whole, it was a good pace. There was a time that I felt it slowed down a little, but it quickly picked up.

PLOT (3)

Once again, Phipps created a great dystopian novel that is very character-centric. Phipps writes beautifully, making you feel like you are completely inside Wynter’s mind. It is a sequel that is full of answers that build up to what is most likely going to be one suspenseful third book. I highly recommend this to be on any dystopian lover’s shelf!
