Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day! I don’t read comics a lot but they are a medium that I enjoy. They’re also something I never talk about on my blog, so I thought what better time to than today! I’m going to share with you my favorite subscription service (because comics can be expensive once you buy the whole series!) and some of my favorites comics that I’ve read! So, let’s get into it…
HOW I READ COMICS
My primary way of reading comics these days is ComiXology! ComiXology is like Kindle Unlimited but specifically for comics. It’s an affordable alternative to buying each comic separately (comics can get expensive). At only $5.99 USD per month, with thousands of available content (including ComiXology Originals), it’s hard to pass up. With that said, I do know for some of the series only a certain number of issues are available then you have to buy past that. So far, I haven’t encountered that with the ones I want to read but if you’re considering this service, take a look at your comic TBR and see if it’s worth it.
They also have an app so you can read comics directly on your phone! This is how I use it. It’s super convenient when I’m just waiting in a line, or have a few minutes to spare, I’ll pull up the app and pick a comic to read!
»» ComiXology is an Amazon company. I know a lot of you do not want to support them so here are some alternatives: GetComics, View Comics, Read Comics Free, Comic Punch, WebToons, Go Comics, or even better…buy physical copies at your local comic book store!
5 COMICS I LOVE
- 40 SECONDS – Goodreads / ComiXology – 40 Seconds is a short series and is a ComiXology original – meaning you can’t read it anywhere else. I really enjoyed this one. It has a unique world that has a lot of potential. I really hope they release more from this one (even though it’s technically concluded). Even if they don’t, its a short and sweet sci-fi perfect for a quick read. Plus, the art is so colorful!
- SCARLET WITCH – Goodreads – I actually haven’t finished this one but I adored the ones I have read. I enjoyed the art. It’s very dark. Plus, I loved learning more about Wanda! (this is the only one on this list that isn’t included in a ComiXology subscription)
- THE WALKING DEAD – Goodreads / ComiXology – I also have not finished this one (there are a lot of comics!) but I do enjoy it! While I’m not a huge fan of the art with it being black and white, I love The Walking Dead in general. I can’t wait to continue this and see how it relates to the show.
- SAGA – Goodreads / ComiXology – This is one I think most of us have heard of or read. I have only read the first one but BOY was it a wild ride! I’ve been wanting to continue this crazy sci-fi for a while. Even better, the whole series is on ComiXology!
- CIVIL WAR – Goodreads / ComiXology – This was the first comic I ever read! My husband encouraged me to and I loved it! It’s actually a great place to start if you’re a noob to Marvel (at least it was when I read it, storylines change a lot lol). Although, I read this before the movie and I think it’s the reason I didn’t like the movie. Shoulda stuck with the original storyline!

I really wish they’d make ComiXology Unlimited available in the UK, as I’d like to start reading more comics, but as you say, it can get expensive! I’ll definitely be checking out some of the alternatives you’ve suggested though!
And I really want to start reading Saga soon. I’ve heard great things about it, and I think at least some of it is on Kindle Unlimited.
Ahhh yeah That would be nice if it was offered everywhere! Its a good deal. But it looks like there are a lot of alternatives out there 🙂
