Daughter of the Pirate King (Daughter of the Pirate King, #1) by Tricia Levenseller

There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for.
Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.
More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
First of all, this book starts off with a punch. In fact, the book just dives right in off the bat with both the plot and characters. This is something I prefer when reading because it sets the tone for the rest of the book – which this one definitely did. It was fast paced and so much fun.
Alosa is such a firecracker. She’s a confident and powerful character, I was just drawn to her. I even loved how her confidence can get her into trouble sometimes because it shows she isn’t perfect, even though I love that she thinks she is 😉
As for the other characters…I like Riden well enough to enjoy the banter but I didn’t feel like there was enough back story to really feel his inner conflicts. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the romance. It felt forced by the end instead of a natural progression.
My favorite character, hands down, would be Enwen. If you saw my Goodreads updates, I claimed him as my BFF. I find his character oddly cute (not physically cute, just an adorable character).
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, though. It was fast paced and really didn’t leave me bored at any time. I believed the motivations of most of the characters from the Pirate King to Alosa to Draxen. My only tiff with the plot was that the magical elements, which I could predict were coming from the very beginning, kind of just dropped in out of no where. Basically, there were subtle hints from the beginning but no build up. So, that could have been fleshed out better through out the book.
Overall, I think this book is a fun, lighthearted, but balanced with some badassery, read. It could have benefited from a little more time for things to develop instead of cramming it into book one of a series, but none of the complaints I had really ruined my enjoyment.
WARNING: There are, I believe, at least 2 attempts of sexual assault in this book.

Great review! I loved DOTPK! Are you going to read Daughter of the Siren Queen next?
I really loved this book. Alosa was too fabulous, and I couldn’t get enough of her and Riden together.
