My rating:
I strictly went to see this only because my husband wanted to. I didn’t expect much — it just didn’t seem like my superhero cup of tea. To my surprise, I actually really enjoyed it.
For starters, it’s a two-hour movie that didn’t feel like two hours. When the “final battle” started, I was thinking to myself wow, that came fast (in a good way). I was so into the story that it flew by for me. I wasn’t sitting there staring at the clock waiting for it to end in any way.
Speaking of the story, I didn’t know much about Doctor Strange’s background (I know, I know). This was my first time meeting him. His story is actually sort of sad. I enjoyed the progression of his character and the magical elements (which is what I thought I wasn’t going to like). My exact words after seeing this to my husband were, “It actually kind of reminded me of some of the YA novels I read” because of the story and the magic.
Also, Benedict Cumberbatch definitely sold the character for me. I love him in Sherlock and he is just as good in this movie.
Since it is a Marvel movie, they had some humor. It wasn’t hilarious, but I appreciated some of the jokes and silly scenes — they made me chuckle.
If a movie has me that interested, then it’s going to be hard for me to find something wrong with it. However, I did have a very small issue (hence the only 1/2 star deduction). I didn’t like the appearance of the dark dimension or the bad guy, Dormammu. It looked a bit like an acid trip and was just too Wonderland-ish for me. That’s not nearly enough to make me dislike this even a little, though.
Overall, I thought this was a great installment to the Marvel movies. It’s different from all the others exclusively because of the magic and alternate dimensions. I enjoyed the Doctor Strange origin story and how he’s not a superhero that just instantly acquires some new skill (like Spiderman and the Hulk) but he has to work towards it and has to find some inner-peace within himself.
Just, go see it.

I love that gif of him putting on the cape!
Yesss! I loved this movie so much! I am a hardcore Marvel fangirl so I went into this expecting it to be amazing and it was. I was totally sold on Benedict as Doctor Strange too! Great review
Tracy @ Cornerfolds
Me too! For all of those statements lol Also, thank you !
Wooo glad you enjoyed it too! I agree, Dr. Strange is not our traditional superhero, he has to work hard to achieve his power. And I love his character growth! My only complain is, while I love the CGI, it also feels very trippy for me haha!
Exactly! I loved that. Also, I agree with the trippy-ness. It was a little weird lol
Great review, so glad you enjoyed it! I’m dying to see it; hopefully soon
Cumberbatch is always excellent.
I hope you like it when you see it!
I 100% agree with everything you said in this review! I had no idea who Dr. Strange was, other than the fact that he was a marvel superhero of some sort, and I had no expectations for the movie, nor did I really care whether or not I actually went to see it in theatres. But we did, and I was super surprised by it! I also found that I was really involved in the story and it flew by so fast that it definitely didn’t feel like 2 hours. I didn’t care for the acid trip either, but I’m excited to see where they take the movies for sure. Also the scene with him and Thor at the end was awesome
It was so good! I really liked his character too. That he just wasn’t gifted his powers or stumble upon them, he had to work for them. It’s a great story
We’ll see how him and Thor work together lol
Glad to see a positive review of this. I haven’t seen it yet but plan to before it goes off. I was wondering how they were going to handle the whole dark dimension/ Dormammu thing, since that’s sort of his arch enemy. Glad that they did this right. Kinda looking forward to seeing his house too since it always had magical qualities. I assume it does in the show too.
I hope you enjoy it when you see it!
loved your review! I also KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Doctor Strange, so you aren’t alone there, hehe.
Thank you! Luckily I had my husband to explain a few things for me
haha
Even though I am an avid Marvel fan, I have been a little bit anxious about seeing Doctor Strange. I am kind of worried that I won’t “get it” since I am not familiar with his character or background. But after reading your review, I feel a lot better about going into the movie without background knowledge. I mean, it is Marvel, how can it go wrong?
You should definitely see it! It’s an origin story for him so it explains everything you need to know. Some parts are a little too trippy for me, but overall it was a great movie
