Seventeen-year-old Ana is a scoundrel by nurture and an outlaw by nature. Found as a child drifting through space with a sentient android called D09, Ana was saved by a fearsome space captain and the grizzled crew she now calls family. But D09—one of the last remaining illegal Metals—has been glitching, and Ana will stop at nothing to find a way to fix him.
Ana’s desperate effort to save D09 leads her on a quest to steal the coordinates to a lost ship that could offer all the answers. But at the last moment, a spoiled Ironblood boy beats Ana to her prize. He has his own reasons for taking the coordinates, and he doesn’t care what he’ll sacrifice to keep them.
When everything goes wrong, she and the Ironblood end up as fugitives on the run. Now their entire kingdom is after them—and the coordinates—and not everyone wants them captured alive.
What they find in a lost corner of the universe will change all their lives—and unearth dangerous secrets. But when a darkness from Ana’s past returns, she must face an impossible choice: does she protect a kingdom that wants her dead or save the Metal boy she loves?
With my 2 month hiatus, this review is being written 2 months AFTER I read the book. It will most likely be short because I do not remember all of my thoughts xD
This book was a lot of fun to read and was the perfect one to get my out of a string of one-star reads. It was action packed, had fun characters, and I just couldn’t put it down.
If you don’t know, this is inspired by the story of Anastasia. You can get hints of it throughout the story like the names of some of the characters and, well, the entire concept. Just place the story of Anastasia in the future and you’ve got Heart of Iron.
Yet, for me, I got some real Treasure Planet vibes. Which, to be honest, made me love this book even more. If you have no seen Treasure Planet, do so now.
The book is told with 4 different POV’s. For the most part, I enjoyed this. It progressed the story quickly (it helped that the chapters were also short) and it took you to different areas of the story as well. However, I didn’t really get connected to 2 of 4 because I didn’t feel like their voices were distinct enough. The other two, though, were great!
The world building isn’t all there. If it wasn’t for the movie Treasure Planet, I think I would’ve had a pretty blank image of the world. I don’t even know if TP is the correct image to use but it worked for me. Needless to say, that means it was lacking a bit. Species and planets just weren’t explained well enough. Also, I would have loved a better background on the crew of the Dossier. In fact, a companion novel of the events prior to HoI would be something I read. Space pirates on heists? I’m all in.
Overall, though, this book was just fun. It was such a page-turner and it’s also easy to read. It’s a perfect one if you want something quick but want action and adventure, with a bit of romance too. Also, that ending…I need the next book!

I’m lucky if I remember the details of a book a week after I read it, so you did pretty darn good for two months. Glad you loved this one—I’ve been meaning to read it!
Honestly, I’m surprised I even got this much written haha it was a struggle. I lost my notes for it so I had to go through book club conversations I had >.< hahah
This is one I’ve had on my TBR for a while. I loved Poston’s last book so I obviously wanted to read this and the fact it was an Anastasia retelling only helped some more. It sucks there were flaws but what book doesn’t have them? I just want to read this some more after your review and I love there are Treasure Planet vibes.
I hope you like it if you read it!
