Natalie Cleary must risk her future and leap blindly into a vast unknown for the chance to build a new world with the boy she loves.
Natalie’s last summer in her small Kentucky hometown is off to a magical start... until she starts seeing the “wrong things.” They’re just momentary glimpses at first—her front door is red instead of its usual green, there’s a pre-school where the garden store should be. But then her whole town disappears for hours, fading away into rolling hills and grazing buffalo, and Nat knows something isn’t right.
That’s when she gets a visit from the kind but mysterious apparition she calls “Grandmother,” who tells her: “You have three months to save him.” The next night, under the stadium lights of the high school football field, she meets a beautiful boy named Beau, and it’s as if time just stops and nothing exists. Nothing, except Natalie and Beau.

PLOT

There was just too much happening. Henry crammed way too much into this book. There are elements of time-travel, alternate dimensions, adoption, Native American culture, identity, romance, science and even questioning the existence of God. It’s just too much.

1/4 of the book was various Native American folklore. There were many pages explaining the science of the brain, dreams and theories on time-travel and alternate dimensions. It started to distract me from the story – which wasn’t very smooth to begin with.

Also, there was definitely insta-love, which doesn’t work. This book is heavily dependent on the romance, it’s basically the entire story. So, when I’m not convinced of the romance, the story doesn’t succeed.

PLOT (1)

The story focuses on Natalie Cleary – who has to be one of my least favorite female protagonists. I found her to be insufferably immature and selfish. Most of the decisions she makes are purely based on what she wants with no consideration of how they may impact the people around her. One of the people who loved her the most, she treats terribly and believes it’s justified. It is mainly that relationship that caused me to lose respect for her.

Also that after being a horrible person in that relationship, she falls instantly in love with the next cute boy – completely contradicting herself.

PLOT (2)

The writing wasn’t terrible and is probably the only redeeming factor for me. Outside of the science mumbo jumbo and the Native American stories – Henry writes really well. There are a lot of good quotes that I got out of this one.

However, even with some good writing, the pacing was off. Mainly due to the enormous info-dumps throughout the story that still leave you confused.

I’m including this section after already having written the review. I recently learned that the Native American representation in this book is incredibly inaccurate. I am not knowledgeable on this topic but you can read about some of the issues here and here.

PLOT (3)

Well, if you can’t tell from my Goodreads Progress Updates or this review – this book wasn’t my favorite (maybe that’s an understatement?). It tried to be too many things all at once and it didn’t work. The main character was unlikeable since she was incredibly selfish and blind to other people’s feelings. Also, the amount of info-dumps and side stories were very distracting, I’m still confused. Overall, I wasn’t fond of this book.

I haven’t seen too many reviews that aren’t glowing for this one so it is nice to read something different. Info dumps scare in books. I find it so hard to get through one with so much info like that. I still plan on reading but will keep in mind the info dumps and such. Sorry this wasn’t better for you!!

I know, I’m definitely in the minority for this one. It’s mainly the protagonist I had an issue with. But, yeah, the Native American stories (which sort of not really serve a purpose to the plot) that annoyed me, and there are about 6 pages of either law or science info dumps that are just….ugh. :/ I hope you enjoy it though! Most people did 🙂

Ooh, I’m so sorry you didn’t like this one.. There was so much hype before and when I read it, I gave it 4.5 stars. However, looking back I think I would’ve rated it 3.5… I’ll admit that the scientific info dumps and Native American stories did put me off a bit. I hope your next book is much better!

Yeah, I haven’t seen too many negative reviews for this one. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. The stories and the main character weren’t my favorite and were hard to either get through or to relate to.

Yeah, I saw a couple of your Goodreads updates, and the MC honestly seems so problematic! Hope you find something better, Molly! :/ And sorry that you had to spend your time reading this! :/

HAHA, maybe I went a little overboard with the updates on that one xD But I like using it to reference when I review lol. whoops! But yes, I just didn’t like the MC. She was infuriating. And it was INSTA LOVE to the max. Just…ugh. :/

I’m sorry this book didn’t turn out a little better. When it started popping up on my IG feed I had hoped it would be better, but you definitely can’t try to cram a hundred and one things into a book and expect it to work. Is there chance of a sequel/series to possibly redeem itself?

I mean, a lot of people seem to enjoy it. So maybe you will? I don’t think there is going to be any sequel. It ended pretty well. I just couldn’t stand the MC or all the extra info :/

Yeah maybe, but I don’t think I’ll bother picking it up. I trust your judgement and opinion on the book, and if there’s one thing that’s a total turn off on a book, it’s a bad MC.

Eeek, I hope you don’t miss out on anything DX

I’m not really too worried about it!! There’s already so much I need/want to read so I’m okay skipping this one.

Aw, I’m so sorry you did not love this book because I have pretty high hopes about it. Nonetheless, I will give it a try sometime, just not as early as I though I would.
