Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

With the Marigold ship free of her father, Fable and the rest of the crew were set to start over. That freedom is short-lived when Fable becomes a pawn in a notorious thug’s scheme. In order to get to her intended destination, she must help him to secure a partnership with Holland, a powerful gem trader who is more than she seems.

As Fable descends deeper into a world of betrayal and deception, she learns that the secrets her mother took to her grave are now putting the people Fable cares about in danger. If Fable is going to save them, then she must risk everything—including the boy she loves and the home she has finally found.

To be honest, I wasn’t even going to pick this book up. I enjoyed Fable enough, I gave it 3.5 stars, but I didn’t love it. I wasn’t attached to any of the characters. Alas, bookstagram convinced me after seeing it over and over again after it’s release. So, I caved.

It’s kind of what I expected. I said Fable felt very surface level and I feel the same exact way about Namesake. It’s a good sequel, don’t get me wrong. It has the adventure and family drama. However, most of the time, I felt this was such a plot heavy book that we didn’t really get to understand Fable. Yeah, she had some daddy issues, but that was just sort of sprinkled in (which is kind of odd to say considering the main reason this book exists is because of her father). It was plot first, emotions last, making it hard for me to care about Fable’s motivations.

On top of that, the romance between Fable and West was so…pointless? Without West’s love for Fable, she wouldn’t have been able to go on her quest, but that’s the problem. It was a romance to drive the plot, but there wasn’t actually any chemistry there. Oh and it’s super convenient that everyone is just one step ahead. Fable always has this assumption of what is going to happen but, of course, someone that is on her side of things is just one step ahead, fixin’ everything.

With all that said, it was a fun book. There’s some pirate-y stuff happening, there’s storms causing chaos, there’s family drama. It’s fun, but there’s so many convenient things always happening and not enough depth to the characters.
