Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism!
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Ok, this was so cute. I was pleasantly surprised. For some reason, I didn’t think I would like this very much? I don’t know why – I knew basically nothing about it. I was so wrong!

I think the story is fun and sweet. Nimona is a firecracker and I loved how she was more of a villain than the villain. She just wanted to fuck shit up 😆 Lord Ballister Blackheart is like the grumpy old man who doesn’t want to be bothered, but has a soft spot. The two of them together was perfect. The pair made me laugh a few times.

I did want some more background but understand it is hard to fit that into a short graphic novel. However, I feel like the explanation of Nimona and her origins was kind of confusing and haphazard. I didn’t finish the book feeling like I understood her character. I understood the background of Blackheart and Goldenloin (his name, though lol) – but I needed more for Nimona.

As for the artwork – it is ok. It’s not the best I’ve ever seen but I think it fits the story and will appeal to a younger audience. That’s all I have to say about that because it wasn’t particular impressive. . .just ok.

Overall, I think this was a sweet story of friendship and it had a great concept. Even though I wanted more from the background, I think it was an entertaining read. I’m sad there is only one! It ends so bittersweet!

Have you read this? Do you have any other graphic novel recommendation?

I have this one on my TBR, so I’m happy to see you enjoyed it! Bummer the illustrations weren’t amazing. I always struggle when a books artwork doesn’t match the story, or feel like they didn’t capture something as well as they should have.

No graphic novel recs but I read this a while back and enjoyed it. I do vaguely remember feeling like I needed more as I had unanswered questions but as a whole I really enjoyed it. I’d actually followed the artist for a while on tumblr so the art style worked perfectly for me but know it wasn’t to everyone’s tastes.

Yeah exactly! I had some unanswered questions too. I’d love a sequel for it!

I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this graphic novel and I’ve been saving it for the halloween/fall season since it seems like a perfect fit. Great review, Molly, glad you enjoyed it!
